ROSENWALDS FOR PRESERVATION

I will admit back in 2001 I had no idea what a Rosenwald school was. My husband pointed out an interesting building and we pulled over and I made an image of it. Unfortunately, shortly there after it was was torn down. It had stood and was an integral part of one of the communities I have been photographing for my Homeplace project. I always say one project leads to another with my work, that is the case here as well. Once I learned about these schools and their importance I began to seek them out. Unfortunately, like so much black history in this country they have often been destroyed and neglected. My goal is to help preserve them through images.

What made this article and images extra special was I was able to honor some dear friends who attended these schools. Miss Princess who not only attended one but was taught by one of her many sisters.
